There was a post to Facebook on the “What’s Happening in Rockford, IL” about water quality for many zip codes in Winnebago County, including Durand. This information in outdated and incorrect for Durand.

Durand, Illinois has brand new wells and wellhouses, with state-of-the-art monitoring systems that provide clean, healthy drinking water for its residents. Our public works department tests the water for chlorine and fluoride level daily. Samples are tested monthly, quarterly and annually in a qualified IEPA lab testing for up to 39 items. All of our latest reports have come back with “all non-detectable”. Just clean drinking water.

The Village of Durand Water System has been much improved since a 2022 survey and study conducted by Winnebago County and R1 Planning. The study is now 3 years old.

The Village of Durand has completed the following IEPA projects:

1. Disconnected the Well on Pepper Street that was becoming higher in nitrates. It is capped and offline.

2. Completed 2 test wells to choose the best location for a new well. An artesian well was hit in test well #2. This is the location of our NEW fully-functioning, clean and compliant Wellhouse, within Saelens Park.

3. The wellhouse on Water & Oak Street has been completely reconstructed and houses all the space and required equipment. This well is over 400’ from the brownfield at the West end of Oak Street.

4. The two Brownfields in the 400 block, on the Square, in downtown Durand, have been released from IEPA and are no longer considered a risk to infiltration.

5. Although the testing criteria have changed, the Village has been required to place a statement on our Utility bills saying that there was lead found in a test last year. This possible lead does not come from the Village of Durand Water System, as the Village has ZERO lead lines within the system. This test may have been taken inaccurately or comes from within the home. The test is not taken by trained and skilled public works employees but taken by the homeowner. The test was sent in early and IEPA did not address it until after the deadline, siting that the Village was too late to retest.

6. The 2025 Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is posted to our website, it was posted to the Village of Durand Facebook page, placed the link on all May & June utility bills and to the body of the email sent to paperless billing customers. The post was revised in June to also include “IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER” form required to be available with the report.

It is in our water improvement plan to replace the water main on W. Howard Street in the coming years as funds open up, unless there becomes a need to do it sooner.

The Village understands the importance of bringing clean, healthy drinking water to our residents. We have worked diligently with IEPA to get not only drinking water but our waste water system improved to the highest quality possible. Recently completing our Main Lift Station which addressed our smaller, overtaxed system to larger and more efficient system. The new Waste Water System eliminates the backups to homes when the system was over worked and is large enough to sustain the system even if our population was to double.
