The Durand Police Department would like to remind residents that there are many SCAMS currently being utilized by unscrupulous individuals. We have all worked hard for our money and should guard it as such. PLEASE be cautious and employe the old adage “if its too good to be true, it probably is”. More recent scams have used tactics that include false stories of emergencies, investment opportunities, or fake online relationships.

Some of the tactics used include:

Posing as: Family members in distress, government officials, representatives of well-known companies

Requesting payment via: wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency

We urge you to not send money to people you have never met in person and do not attempt to verify their legitimacy by calling a number they have provided. Never give out personal financial information and be advised no government agency will ever ask for payment in gift cards or cryptocurrency.
